The Sextant

The Sextant is a continuing educational publication written by David J. Koch to provide practical guidance for individuals seeking to rebuild their lives after incarceration, as well as for correctional professionals, educators, volunteers, counselors, community reentry organizations, employers, family members, and anyone interested in successful rehabilitation and reducing recidivism.

Named after the traditional navigational instrument used by mariners to determine their position and chart a safe course, The Sextant symbolizes the importance of direction, purpose, planning, and disciplined decision-making when navigating life’s most difficult challenges. Just as a navigator uses a sextant to avoid becoming lost at sea, these articles are intended to help readers establish a clear course toward successful community reentry, personal responsibility, productive citizenship, and long-term success.

Rather than focusing on excuses or barriers, The Sextant emphasizes practical solutions, personal accountability, education, goal setting, employment, organization, perseverance, and the development of habits that contribute to lasting positive change. Many of the articles draw upon David Koch’s own life experiences, including his successful transition from incarceration to an aviation career, entrepreneurship, and decades of volunteer work in correctional institutions throughout the United States.

The articles in this collection address topics including successful community reentry, obtaining employment after incarceration, preparing for job interviews, overcoming adversity, reducing recidivism, cleaning up life’s accumulated challenges, personal reinvention, and developing the mindset necessary to build a productive and meaningful future. Although originally written for individuals with criminal backgrounds, the principles discussed throughout these publications are equally applicable to anyone striving to overcome adversity, achieve worthwhile goals, and create lasting positive change in their lives.
